Magnetodrone technology is a new, precision-guided cancer therapy that uses microscopic, self-propelled bacteria to deliver drugs directly into solid tumors. This innovative approach aims to overcome a major limitation of traditional treatments: the inability of drugs to effectively reach and penetrate the entire volume of a tumor.
How Magnetodrones Work
The Magnetodrones: These are non-pathogenic, living bacteria that are sensitive to magnetic fields. They are loaded with a chemotherapy drug and injected directly into the tumor. Unlike other treatments, these micro-organisms can swim through the tumor’s interstitial spaces without relying on the often-impaired blood vessels found in tumors. This allows them to spread the therapeutic payload throughout the entire tumor volume, including hard-to-reach, low-oxygen areas called hypoxic zones, where cancer stem cells often reside.
The PolarTrak: This is an external medical device that creates unique, computer-controlled magnetic fields around the tumor. The PolarTrak serves two critical functions: it traps the Magnetodrones inside the tumor to prevent them from circulating elsewhere in the body, and it guides them to ensure they spread uniformly, releasing the drug throughout the entire tumor mass. The process is managed by an AI that defines the tumor’s shape and volume from MRI imaging data.
Advantages of This Technology
By delivering the drug directly to the tumor, magnetodrone technology offers significant potential benefits:
Increased Drug Concentration: It can deliver a drug concentration inside the tumor that is up to 50 times higher than that achieved with traditional systemic chemotherapy.
Reduced Side Effects: Since the drug is contained within the tumor, the rest of the body is spared from the toxic side effects associated with chemotherapy. This can lead to a much better quality of life for patients.
Enhanced Efficacy: By reaching all parts of the tumor, including hypoxic zones, the treatment can be more effective at killing cancer cells and may help to prevent recurrence.
Potential Immunotherapy Effect: The bacteria themselves may trigger an immune response, prompting the patient’s own immune cells to attack the cancer.
Clinical Status
Magnetodrone technology is currently in the clinical trial stage. Starpax Biopharma is testing the platform for various solid tumors, including pancreatic, prostate, and head and neck cancers, with the goal of providing a less toxic and more effective alternative to existing treatments
