A new study suggests that GLP-1 receptor agonists—including Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro—may improve survival in patients with colon cancer. These drugs, commonly used for type 2 diabetes and weight loss, were linked to a five-year mortality rate of 15.5%, compared with 37.1% in patients not taking them, meaning users were less than half as likely to die within five years.
The survival benefit remained significant after adjusting for age, BMI, diabetes status, and cancer stage, suggesting effects beyond metabolic improvements. Researchers propose that GLP-1 agonists may reduce inflammation, improve insulin sensitivity, and directly inhibit tumor growth.
The strongest benefit was observed in patients with obesity, highlighting a potential role for GLP-1 drugs in counteracting the harmful metabolic effects that promote colon cancer progression. These findings point to a promising new avenue for adjunctive therapy, though further research is needed to confirm causality and determine optimal use in cancer care.
