Blood Test Detects Womb Cancer Recurrence Early with High Accuracy

Researchers have developed a new blood test called ECctDNA that can detect the return of womb (endometrial) cancer with high accuracy. The test works by finding tiny fragments of tumor DNA in the blood, offering a non-invasive alternative to pelvic exams, imaging, and biopsies.

The test can deliver results within 48 hours and also identifies genetic changes in the cancer, which may help doctors choose more personalized treatments. It is already being used in early clinical validation at the Leicester Royal Infirmary and could eventually reduce costs by replacing more expensive procedures.

Experts are working with the National Health Service to improve quality control, with the goal of making it widely available across hospitals by 2028.

Womb cancer is the fourth most common cancer in UK women, and early detection of recurrence is important. Common warning signs include post-menopausal bleeding, abnormal vaginal discharge, and persistent abdominal pain.
