A Phase 2 trial shows that a fixed-duration combination of obinutuzumab and venetoclax is highly effective for untreated Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) and Small Lymphocytic Leukemia (SLL). All patients responded to treatment, with 90% achieving complete or near-complete remission and 100% reaching undetectable levels of residual disease by the ninth cycle. Three months after treatment, these results were maintained, and no patient experienced disease progression or death.
The trial involved older patients (median age 69.5) or those with other health conditions, using a 12-cycle regimen starting with IV obinutuzumab, followed by ramped-up oral venetoclax, then venetoclax alone. Side effects were manageable, with neutropenia being the most common severe effect.
Researchers highlight the combination’s high efficacy and tolerable safety, though the small patient number and short follow-up mean longer-term results are still needed to confirm lasting benefits.
